Stop the Violence!

The television and print news are full of horrific stories about kids and violence in our streets and schools. Rarely do we see the stories that show that most youth are well-intending and law abiding, and many youth take leadership roles in their schools and communities to make positive changes.

At the Hamilton Fish Institute, we hear about many of these efforts and try to applaud them in our “Kudos” section of our Monthly 4-1-1 News Summaries

This past week, we received word about a group of high school students in Riviera Beach, FL that we wanted to bring to your attention.

The students from Suncoast Community High School in Riviera Beach have formed a group called Alter8tion and recorded "Stop the Violence," an album speaking out against gun violence. They're challenging radio stations and schools across the country to unite against gun violence by playing the album's first track, "Touch Your Mind," at noon on March 15, 2005.

Written by the students and produced by Aldric Marshall, a teacher at the kids’ high school, "Stop the Violence" is an album that both expressed the pain and frustration felt by the students who are witnesses to such violence, but it is also testimony to the students' strength and their hopes that others will hear their voices.

Please join these youth in their efforts to promote their message and their song by calling your local radio station on March 15 and asking them to play “Touch Your Mind.”

In the meantime, if you know of other positive, original, and creative efforts in which youth are involved, please let us know!
