Preparing Youth for the Workforce and Careers
The U.S. Department of Labor's Employment and Training Administration (ETA) supports a wide variety of programs to ensure that all youth have the skills and training they need to successfully make the transition to adulthood and careers. These programs include:
• Job Corps — Job Corps is the nation's largest and most comprehensive
residential education and job training program for at-risk youth, ages 16 through
24. Private companies, state agencies, federal agencies, and unions recruit
young people to participate in Job Corps, where they can train for and be placed
in jobs.
• Youth Opportunity Grants — This program provides services to youth,
ages 14-21, living in high-poverty areas.
• Youth Formula-Funded Grant Programs — These programs provide services
to eligible youth, ages 14-21, in local communities. Funds are allocated based
on the number of unemployed individuals in areas of substantial unemployment;
the relative excess number of unemployed individuals in a state; and the relative
number of disadvantaged youth in a state.
• Apprenticeship — Apprenticeship is a combination of on-the-job
training and related classroom instruction in which workers learn the practical
and theoretical aspects of a highly skilled occupation. Applicants for apprenticeship
programs must be at least 16 years old and meet the program sponsor's qualifications.

• State and Local Formula Youth Grants; and
• Competitive Grants -- Youth Opportunity Grants, Youth Offender Demonstration
Grants, Going Home: Serious and Violent Offender Reentry Initiative, and the
Youth Development Practitioner Apprenticeship Initiative.

Re-establishment of the Advisory Committee on Apprenticeship
After consultation with the General Services Administration, the Department of Labor has determined that the re-establishment of a national advisory committee on apprenticeship is necessary and in the public interest. Accordingly, the Employment and Training Administration has re-chartered the Advisory Committee on Apprenticeship (ACA). The charter for the ACA expired on February 13, 2005. The current charter was signed March 2, 2005, and will expire two years from that date.
