Hamilton Fish Institute Research Partners Advise on Classroom Management Research for Preventing Violence in School
Two Principal Investigators of the Hamilton Fish Institute Consortium will participate in a National Summit Series on Classroom Management & School Violence Prevention. The Series is sponsored by the American Board for Certification of Teacher Excellence. The Series includes America 's foremost psychologists and education researchers.
Steve Rollin, Ed.D. (http://www.abcte.org/summit/cmsvp/bio.html#rollin), and Jeff Sprague, Ph.D. (http://www.abcte.org/summit/cmsvp/bio.html#sprague), will serve as Expert Participants.
Dr. Rollin is Professor, Florida State University, Chairman of the American Psychological Association's Coalition for Psychology in Schools. Dr. Sprague is Professor of Special Education and Co-Director, University of Oregon Institute on Violence and Destructive Behavior.
Additionally, Russell Skiba, Ph.D. (http://www.abcte.org/summit/cmsvp/bio.html#skiba), Professor of Counseling and Educational Psychology, Indiana University, has submitted a paper for the Institute’s conference on Persistently Safe Schools, September 11-14, 2005, Philadelphia, http://www.hamfish.org/conference/2005/index.html. The title of Dr. Skiba’s proposal is “‘Discipline is always teaching’: Effective alternatives to zero tolerance in schools.”
And Dorothy L. Espelage, Ph.D. (http://www.abcte.org/summit/cmsvp/bio.html#espelage), Associate Professor in the Counseling Psychology Division of the Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, has provided resource support and expert technical assistance on bullying.
The goal of the National Summit Series will be to collect and evaluate valid classroom management research with the goal of developing an action plan to provide new teachers with the evidence-based strategies they need to effectively manage their classrooms and prevent school violence.
Participation in the first installment has been coordinated on a “by invitation” basis. The American Board will release results of the first meeting, and update this Web site with related research and other information (http://www.abcte.org/summit/cmsvp/index.php).
