Connecticut SAVE students send visual message about violence in schools
Members of a North Haven, Conn. chapter of Students Against Violence Everywhere (SAVE) placed purple and orange Post-it notes on every locker. Every fourth locker got a purple Post-it to show that one in four students nationwide is the victim of violence in school. To read this article visit:

Teens build bridges to respectful discussions
Some 370 students from more than a dozen Portland-area high schools converged to discuss issues about race, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, gender, religion, family and mental and physical disabilities. The student-led diversity conference, "From Words to Action," allowed students from conservative environments the opportunity to openly discuss issues that parents and school boards may find controversial and districts shy away from addressing.
Juvenile Violent-Crime Rate Reaches Lowest Level in Decade
The arrest rate of juveniles charged with violent crimes has dropped to its lowest level since 1983, the Criminal Justice Newsletter reported Jan. 16.

Conflict Resolution Found to Curb Violence
In a study published in the April issue of Children and Schools, a journal from the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), author Debra Woody, LMSW-ACP, Ph.D. and Assistant Professor at University of Texas at Arlington, explains that conflict resolution curbs less extreme acts of violence.

12-year-old girl stabbed on school bus
A 12-year-old girl was recovering Thursday after being stabbed seven times while riding a school bus, apparently by a teenage girl who randomly chose her as someone to try and kill, a law enforcement officer said.
One killed, one injured at D.C. high school
One student was killed and another wounded in a shooting at a high school in the nation's capital, city and school officials said.
DC School Safety Plan Readied
Metropolitan Police Chief Charles H. Ramsey is expected to present a school safety plan to Mayor Anthony A. Williams. The guidelines will address concerns raised by the fatal shooting of a student at Ballou High School in Southeast on Feb. 2.
California County responding to school shooting incident
A domestic shooting outside a Bay area elementary school is raising serious safety concerns.
An Educator Says 'Instinct' Helped Halt New York School Shooting
An assistant principal at a suburban high school near Albany said on Friday that instinct and "just doing my job" enabled him to subdue a 16-year-old student who wounded a teacher and fired at classmates with a shotgun on Monday.

School policies differ when it comes to parent notification
Some Pennsylvania parents were angered that a middle school waited a day to inform them that a student brought a gun to school. According to the Associated Press, no law requires schools to release information about such episodes, and state and federal regulations limit what schools can say about students, said Emily Leader, the deputy chief counsel for the Pennsylvania School Boards Association.
